Physical DescriptionColorless lead glass; cast (pressed ?), cut, stamped gilt metal frame. Flat, circular plaque, formed of two sheets of glass, with convex polished faces, arranged back-to-back against sheets of black cardboard; back of one of the sheets with molded depiction of Napoleon I seated in a throne, holding a laurel wreath in his outstretched right hand, inscribed below "E.GATTEAUX.ROME./1812.", details filled with white plaster; the other side with an impressed classical, female, helmeted head in the center, surrounded by a laurel wreath tied with ribbon, and five emblems of the arts, encircled by the inscription "ECOLE FRANCAISE DES BEAUX ARTS A ROME ETABLIE ET AUGMENTEE PAR NAPOLEON EN 1803 ", details filled on the reverse with white plaster; in a two-part telescoping gilt frame, with molded guilloche bands on each side; sides incised.Provenance
