Interpretive Notes
The two-dimensional rendering of the raised diamonds on this beaker may have been inspired by mold-blown Venetian vessels showing this distinct pattern in relief. An umbo vase in The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, is decorated in this fashion. Similar patterns were also painted on buildings in Tyrol, including the lower facades of Ambras Castle.
Physical DescriptionColorless (grey) non-lead glass; blown, diamond-engraved. Straight-sided, conical bowl decorated with diamond-point engraving: border of formal foliage at top and bottom, with wide band between divided into six panels, three with fields of cross-hatched diamond alternating with three of formal foliate scrolls; trumpet-shaped foot with folded rim, decorated with stylized floral band; rough pontil mark; inscribed "13" on the top of the foot in white paint.
