Interpretive Notes
This tazza with a composite lion stem was probably made in Innsbruck rather than in Venice, as has been suggested for a similar vessel in the Veste Coburg, Germany. Few thinly blown large vessels with elaborate diamond-point engraving and cold-painted decoration have survived. (see 64.3.6)
Physical DescriptionWineglass. Colorless (grey) non-lead glass; blown, pattern-molded, diamond- engraved. Shallow, circular pan top decorated with diamond- point engraving: formal scroll and foliage border encircles a band divided into four panels by foliate panels, with circular "floral" panel at the center; tall stem composed of a merese above a straight section, disk, baluster, molded lion-mask section, with a large, swelling section at the base; circular foot decorated with diamond-point engraved band of pointed ovals; rough pontil mark.
