Physical DescriptionBeaker. Colorless non-lead glass; cut, painted and gold and silver leaf decoration. Cylindrical shape with cut rim and foot rim to accommodate narrow glass rings (lower ring missing); upper ring decorated with band of flowers and leaves against red background; on reverse, a lengthy inscription in Hebrew, reading in German "Whoever empties this beaker to the good of gracious souls, may his good heart not suffer the misfortunes of this earth."; curved oval panel set into side, on outer side a portrait of a rabbi, with an inscription surrounding it: "To the memory of a good friend -KZ [Katz] as a family of the priesthood"; the reverse of the medallion covered with silver leaf and lengthy inscription in Hebrew: "Whoever honors---and empties this glass in his regard, to him I wish as much luck as drops can be contained herein" and continues "Made by Mildner at Gutenbrunn on the Estate of Gradin in the area of the forest Furnbergerwald" and "1798"; flat base with flower-cut pontil mark, band of cut ovals along the rim.Provenance
