Physical DescriptionColorless non-lead glass; blown, engraved. Globular bowl, with vertical rim, open to the hollow, cylindrical stem; covered with engraved decoration, including a lappet border, altar bearing a double-headed, crowned eagle with coat of arms on its breast, tiered fesswise in the first division, three bends in the second (the Hapsburg arms), topped by a flaming heart on a cross- hatched hearth, and a radiance below clouds, with elaborate foliate scrolls at either side, and the inscription "Was gott und/dem Käyser träü"; the initials "HCFS" below the altar; on the reverse, a quartered coat of arms bearing three pallets on the first and fourth quarters, and crowned griffins in the second and third, with florid mantling, crowned helmets and crests, including a sheep standing beneath a tree, and a crowned griffin; foliate sprays at either side, tied with a bow at the bottom; stylized flowering large plants at either side; engraved foliate wreath at the base of the bowl; engraved trellis wrapped around the stem; trumpet foot with engraved geometric band and a floral and foliate wreath; folded foot; rough pontil mark.Provenance
