Physical DescriptionColorless non-lead glass; blown, cut, engraved, gilt. (a) Tapered, straight-sided bowl with waisted lower section, gilt rim; gilt carved scrolls on either side of the bowl; engraved crowned coat of arms of William VIII of Hesse-Kassel, with lion supporters; elaborate, minutely-engraved frame of leaves and flowers, scrolls, and fruit intertwined with two Corinthian columns at the sides; draped baldachin over the top; on the reverse, an orb with engraved stylized map, heads and arms of putti, some holding drinking glasses, and inscribed "IK danku/zeer" /I thank you with all my heart/Je vous rende grace/ Jo son ob/ligato"; four heads of winds placed in the corners, among densely engraved, billowing clouds, blowing at the orb; figures of three nude putti sitting at the top of the orb, each holding a drinking glass; inscribed between the figures "vivant/ vivant" and inscribed above and at the left "Gutte freunde aller Orten"; cut rounded panels above pointed ovals at the base of the bowl; two disks above a stem consisting of a facet-cut flattened ball above a cylindrical section and basal angular disk; disk foot with scalloped rim, engraved matte triangles on the upper edge, a ring of polished ovals on the underside. (b) Sloping, domed shape with cut rounded panels on top, with engraved band of foliate scrolls running across them; gilt band above a rounded shoulder, with engraved foliate scrolls on the side; inset cut brim, inscribed "189" in white paint, finial composed of a gilt dome on top of a facet-cut ovoid knop, on a waisted stem, flared at the base.
