Physical DescriptionTransparent light blue and pale yellowish brown; translucent deep blue and purple; opaque white glasses; cast from slices of preformed mosaic-glass canes; top of vessel apparently sheared while glass was still viscous. Hemispherical bowl (incomplete; rim not finished0. Formed from slices of four types of mosaic-glass cane: (1) spirally wound white and deep blue in purple matrix; (2) cluster of white spots in light blue matrix, with purple border; (3) light blue hexagon with purple border (4) spirally-wound white and purple in yellowish brown matrix. Slices arranged in groups to make cruciform pattern: at center, cross consisting of five similar squares made of slices of type 1, with one central square and another comprising each arm; all squares have sixteen slices and central square has four slices of type 3 along each side, separating it from arms. Outside this cross, second cruciform motif: eight more or less square motifs made of slices of type 2; four squares occupy spaces between arms of first cross and so complete large central square which is surrounded by row of slices of type 3; other four squares project from arms of first cross. Remaining, upper part of vessel consists of slices of type 4. Here and there on both surfaces: traces of white substance, perhaps separating agent used in manufacture.Provenance
