Interpretive Notes
Count Pyotr Khristianovich Wittgenstein (1768-1849) played an important role in the Napoleonic War in 1805-1807 and in the 1812 Patriotic War. In 1812 he commanded a corps in St. Petersburg. The portrait was made from an engraving by I. Chessky.
Physical DescriptionColorless and gold glasses; blown, applied, tooled, gilded. Wine glass with a straight cylindrical bowl, faceted with a band of wide panels on the bottom, followed by a narrow, undecorated band, a wide band of narrow, concave facets, and a deeply reset rim area. Uncut medallion on front with a gilded profile portrait of Count Wittgenstein facing left; above the portrait the cyrillic inscription "Count Wittgenstein." The image is surrounded by a deeply cut grove, decorated with a gilded, scalloped rim; to the lower right beneath the frame the gilded signature "Ruckstuhl fec" now partially missing. The stemmed foot is attached with a faceted merese to the bowl and cut with irregular facets. The flat, solid foot is cut underneath the rim with a band of concave flutes. Cut and polished concave pontil mark under foot.
