Interpretive Notes
The attribution to the Brooklyn Flint Glass Company is based on the resemblance of this decanter to a claret decanter exhibited by the Brooklyn firm at the London Crystal Palace Exhibition of 1851. The decanter shown in the 1851 catalog has a handle and a cut ring between shoulder and neck, but is otherwise identical. No similar pattern has turned up anywhere else.
Physical DescriptionColorless lead glass; blown, cut. Bell-shaped body, long neck tapering slightly at top, everted rim cut and polished flat, neck is cut in flat vertical panels, body is cut into a series of vertical grooves, base is cut in a series of grooves matching those on body and meeting at center so than entire base is like a multi-petaled flower. Large piece of potstone in the base and smaller one in neck; (b) hollow conical stopper is cut with an air-trap in the center and cut into similar vertical grooves, shank is ground and polished as is the inside of the neck.
