Physical DescriptionBrown salt-glazed stoneware; turned, molded, enameled, gilt. Squat, cylindrical shape; tapered rim with molded rings below, the top one gilt and with bands of white dots alternating with bands of blue dots, on a gilt background; the sides with heavy rounded bands in relief at the top and bottom, with molded guilloche band enameled blue and yellow, with raised, gilt dots in the centers; gilt bands above and below the guilloche bands, which frame a wide central band, with relief-molded and enameled hunting scenes, on one side, hunting a bear, with men on foot with spears and a man on horseback brandishing a sword, and dogs attacking a black bear; a related scene on the other side; a band of gilt diamonds and red, blue, and white enamel devices above the hunting scene; a circular panel on the front, with elaborately enameled coat of arms against a bright blue background; sloping foot inscribed in white enamel "HERR PHILIPP VON SEUBOTHEN, BVRGERMEISTER ZV ROTENBVRG. ANNO. 1670."; applied loop handle with molded yellow-enameled grotesque mask with red mustache and blue-and-white striped "beard" with green mid-band; slightly domed pewter cover hinged to the handle; shell thumb-piece incised inscription ".A.M./ .V.S." on either side of a hallmark featuring two crenellated towers, and the initials "M [N ?]/K"; turned finial; applied angular pewter ring on the base rim; slightly concave base, partly glazed; square leather label printed in gold "EDWIN J./BEINECKE/COLLECTION/ 112"; faintly inscribed "602." in black ink.
