Physical DescriptionColorless (greenish) non-lead glass; blown, enameled, gilt. (a) Straight-sided, cylindrical form with flared, folded base rim; gilt (rubbed) band with intersecting arcs of white enamel dots, and blue, red and green dots at the intersection, with flanking rows of tiny white and blue dots; large depiction of a man in yellow armor astride a flesh-colored horse, holding a baton; lily-of-the-valley plants around the base; on the reverse, an elaborate coat of arms in polychrome enamel, with the initials "C.M.Z.B." in white enamel above; lengthy inscriptions at either side: "Frisch ins feldt, ess dregt geltd./Bruder tuh nicht weichen. hald bey mir/Ich bey dir. lass das gluck imer/Schleigen.ehr woln wir er langen./Auss unnd darvon. lass unnss/nicht lang stille sthan./ANNO DOMINI/ 1641." and "Der wilkumb binn ich genandt./unnd werdt der halben hier her/ gesandt. so auss gefuttert/mit gutten bir oder wein./das wer zum ersten kompt herein/den wirdt man mich ihn setzen/fur./da mitt ein Jder seh und stur/das ess der hauss herr gut mit ihn/ meindt. und held ihn vor ein wer../ den freundt. wirt sich nicht lang/darfur wehrn. solchs gereicht/ist und den hauss herrn/zu ehrn"; red and yellow bands at the base; white enamel radial dashes on the rim; conical kick on the bottom, with small rough pontil mark. (b) Double-domed form, with folded rim and cylindrical brim; enameled band of stylized red, yellow and blue fruit amidst green and white scrolls; enameled red and yellow bands and scalloped white bands above and below; two rows of white dots on the rim, originally flanking a gilt band (rubbed off); white dashes on the upper dome, finial and base of the upper ball finial; rough pontil mark inside.Provenance
