Interpretive Notes
The Bakewell exhibit at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia featured pressed glass and this blown and cut lead glass compote. The Bakewell firm had been famous for this type of cut glass earlier in the century. The company received a prize medal for this display.
Physical DescriptionColorless lead glass; blown, cut. Hemispherical bowl, rim cut in 10 shallow scallops; body cut with row of fans above and below large-scale cross-hatched diamonds; applied solid facet-cut stem, heavy solid circular foot applied to base of stem and cut with multi-pointed star underneath in center and a row of rays near outside bottom surface of foot.
