Lacquer was an expensive and exotic material imported from Asia. It inspired many European imitations. This bottle was probably made at the court of Augustus II, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland (1670-1733).
Physical DescriptionBottle. Very dark blue non-lead glass appearing black, red, blue, and green enamels, silver, and gilding; blown, enameled, silvered, gilded. A black bottle with elongated neck, flaring towards the rim above a single rib. Its globular body decorated with a red, blue, green, silvered and gilded chinoiserie landscape depicting figures engaged in various pursuits, interspersed with foliage and rocky outcrops, insects in flight, and buildings in the distance. The elongated, swollen neck has gilded decoration with stylized scrolls, and lambrequins around the rim.
