Physical DescriptionClear glass; free-blown, engraved and cut. Plain conical foot with pontil mark inverted baluster stem with tear accompanied on both sides by mereses, ball knop with tears surmounted by another merese, around funnel bowl; the lower ball knop and upper baluster are faceted, lower baluster is cut into panels; engraved decoration: on the bowl, above the faceting and a plain section, a very elaborate scene of Orpheus sitting on a bench or tree trunk and playing a lyre, behind him a large tree; he is surrounded by many animals, including a monkey and squirrel on the tree; on the left a group of large animals, a bear, a stag, a hog, as well as a rabbit and a goat; on the right a rock-like formation on which an eagle is perched, and other animals, a fox, a lion, a unicorn and a horse; on the reverse, to complete the scene, a few trees and a few tall rock formations with jumping mountain goats; in contrast with the usual style all the engraved decoration has been polished while the background has been left matte; on the upper foot a grass stripe running around the periphery with a frieze and rock formations, the engraving not being polished while the background is clear.Provenance
