Interpretive Notes
The painted decoration of the goblet imitates filigree glass, which was one of the most renowned products of the glasshouses in Venice/Murano. However, this particular design would not have been possible to accomplish with the filigree technique. By the way of imitation, the artist therefore achieved a new, charming result.
Physical DescriptionThe goblet is blown of colorless glass with grayish tinge. It has a trumpet-shaped bowl that is applied to a hollow, flattened knop between two colorless collars and a tall trumpet-shaped hollow foot with a folded edge.
The goblet is overall decorated with patterns in white enamel. The bowl has vertical panels decreasing in size towards the narrowing base that are outlined by three vertical lines. The eight panels alternate sections with a simple band of thin interlaced lines with panels of stylized floral scrolls. The widest zone of the flattened knop has a horizontal band of scrolls framed by double lines. A narrow band of scrolls encircles the mereses. The conical foot is decorated with the same pattern as the bowl, increasing in size toward the edge of the base. A rough pontilmark is placed high (about 1 3/4") inside the base.
