Physical DescriptionTranslucent milkglass; free-blown, with multicolored enamel. Cylindrical body with spreading base and conical underside having rough pontil mark, solid ear-shaped handle applied to upper and lower body; pewter top with thumb piece attached to upper handle, on the inside three marks: first mark has an anchor, the initials "??174"; the second mark seems to be identical to the first; the third mark is an eagle and the date "1721"; pewter ring around lower body; the multicolored enamel decoration, predominantly in shades of red and pink as well as light green and dark blue, consists of a medallion showing a shepherd and his flock, a dog, a tree and a landscape; the medallion is surrounded by the bust of another shepherd at top flanked by two birds; around the central and lower part two ear-shaped motifs enclosing festoons and a checkerboard, below clusters of leaves and flowers; to the right and left of this medallion, between medallion and handle are two large bunches of leaves and flowers in full bloom; on top an ornamental band of blossoms accompanied by blue dashes alternating with lined red zig-zag pattern and geometrized leaves.
