Physical DescriptionCovered Goblet with Hunting Scene. Clear heavy glass; engraved, cut and gilded. (a) Spreading slightly domed foot with rough pontil mark, heavy inverted baluster with many tears, resting on a flat knop and surmounted by a knop-like merese around funnel bowl; (b) set-in slightly domed cover with heavy baluster finial containing many tears and surmounted by a flattened knop while resting on a ringer; the engraved decoration consists of an elaborate hunting scene covering the upper part of the bowl, including two groups of three riders each with the first group having falcons; a few large crane-like birds of which one has just been attacked by a falcon; many small knolls and hills in the distance; groups of trees; a shepherd and his flock; a silhouette of a small village; a windmill; cut decoration: below rim a row of ovals, below a bowl has panels enclosing ovals by forming an arched frieze, the stem is faceted, on the upper part of the foot another arch panel and oval frieze which is repeated again on the top of the cover, faceted finial on cover; the gilded decoration consists of the design of an arched friezes; the knops of stem and top of the finial as well as a row of pentagonal facets on the upper baluster of the cover; rim of bowl is gilded.
