Interpretive Notes
This goblet bears the conjoined arms of Saxony and England. It probably refers to the marriage of Frederick Lewis, Prince of Wales, and Augusta, princess of Saxe-Gotha, in 1736.

Physical DescriptionColorless non-lead glass; blown, cut, gilt. (a) Large round funnel bowl with cut rounded ribbing with oval facets at the base; gilt rim; gilt crowned conjoined coat of arms of Saxony and England, encircled by a garter inscribed "HONI SOIT QUI MAL V. PENSE", with crowned lion and unicorn supporters; on the reverse the crowned conjoined mirror monograms JNH (?) and VLH (?), with laurel sprays below; stem composed of a panel-faceted ball knop above a panel- and diamond-faceted inverted baluster, and a faceted basal knop; domed, circular foot with oval cut facets; rough pontil mark. (b) Flattened, circular shape with folded gilt rim and inset flange; gilt decoration of angel's heads and foliate scrolls; finial composed of a gilt ball knop above a panel-faceted true baluster with gilt band, and a faceted basal ball knop; rough pontil mark.
