Physical DescriptionClear very bubbly glass with slight yellowish-green tinge; free- blown, enameled and gilded. Almost cylindrical slightly tapering downwards, with pushed up base having rough pontil mark, the body being applied to high pedestal foot with flaring and flattened underfolded rim; enamel decoration: around the central body a broad frieze shows a couple standing upright and clad in yellow, black and white, flanking symbols of the carpenters craft; they stand on a grass strip with a few grass tufts as well as lily-of-the-valley stalks with white, blue and red blossoms; on the obverse is another gentleman clad in black and white and holding a brown dog in his left hand; in the empty spaces quartered and gilded diamonds studded with white beads; the inscription on the upper section reads: "Das erbare Handtwerck Der Zimerleut Die Sindt ein theill versoffene leutt. Ich Georg Weimar hab Ihm das glas zum tranckgeldt verehrt, den er hatt's an meinen Hause verdinett. Den 1 Octobris Ao 1626. Meister Samuel Hornn Ist das glas lieb, Wers ihm zerbricht oder stiltt Der ist ein Schelm vnd dieb. Frau Anna Hornn, Ist in Ihrem Sachen Willigk hinden vndt vorn, Und geht gleich woll nicht zum bornn. Magister Michael Hornn hat sein breunlein unter den arm Trinkt auch darzu nicht gern bornn, Darum leckt Ihm das Hundlein Hinden vndt vorn." (The good craft of the carpenters are partly drunkards. I George Weimar have given him the glass as a payment because he has earned it working on my house. October 16, 1626. Master Samuel Hornn likes to add everybody who is going to break or steal a piece is a thief and slop, Mrs. Anna Hornn is in her things very studious and doesn't go immediately to the spring (source of drinking ?).
