Interpretive Notes
This glass is a piece from a set composed of a decanter and 38 wineglasses. Each glass represented a state in the union. The set was displayed by the Dorflinger firm at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia.

Physical DescriptionColorless lead glass; blown, cut and engraved. Bucket-shape bowl of very thick glass with cut and polished rim, very heavily cut panels of diamonds around bowl, one panel has engraved shield with a plow and two classical females, one with a liberty cap and the other with an overflowing cornucopia, the crest of a horse's head above and "F.D.Bedle.Gov.1876" in old-English lettering below (This is the coat-of-arms of the state of New Jersey); solid stem with heavy solid knop cut in panels at top, heavy applied flat foot cut in scallops and points with a diamond pattern underneath. Paper label on top surface of foot with "DORFLINGER" above a decanter and glasses.
