Physical DescriptionBrown salt-glazed stoneware; molded, turned, enameled. Low, cylindrical shape; turned, tapered rim; the sides with relief- molded human figures representing the planets; a white band above the figures, inscribed "SATVRNVS" (a man with a beard, holding a scythe, a mermaid and goat at the sides), "IVPITER" (a man with billowing green cape, and a hippocamp at the side), "MARS" (a male figure in armor, holding a shield and sword, a ram alongside), "SOL" (in a blue oval, a man wearing armor, red cape, holding a sunburst and a baton, a lion alongside), "VENVS" (a nude female, holding an arrow and a burning heart, a bull alongside), "MERCVRIVS" (a partly-clad male figure, holding a caduceus, mermaids alongside), and "LVNA" (a female figure holding a crescent moon and a staff); a blue band above the white inscription band; lily-of-the-valley sprays between each figure, with blue discs encircled by white dots above each spray; wavy green and tan ground below the figures; band of stylized red-and-white and blue-and-white flowers alternating with green leaves at the base; applied loop handle, with small depression on top, for a pewter mount, the side of the handle with enameled yellow interlaced band and stylized blue leaves; flat, unglazed bottom; square tan paper label with impressed printing "EDWIN J/ BEINECKE/COLLECTION" and an illegible number.Provenance
