Physical DescriptionBrown salt-glazed stoneware; turned, incised, enameled, gilded. Cylindrical shape; turned, tapered rim, with turned molding below; sides with band at the top enameled in blue and white in a rope work design; incised diamond facets on the sides in a wide panel, enameled blue, white, and gilded vertical rows; two circular panels on the front, with elaborate coats of arms, one with a red rooster, the other with grey-blue bird; applied loop handle with white, green and blue enameled band; dated "1.6/43" at the base of the handle; spreading base with enameled band of red, blue and yellow stylized fruit in an undulating green vine with white stylized leaves; domed pewter cover, hinged to the handle, with shell thumb-piece; turned finial with two disks and rounded top; engraved monograms "C.H" and H.H" on top; inscribed inside "208" and "488 U S N" in black ink; a piece of red sealing wax inside the cover; angular pewter band at the base; flat, partly unglazed bottom, with piece of red sealing wax in the center.
