Physical DescriptionClear glass with minute bubbles; free-blown, cut and engraved. (a) Flat foot with slight pontil mark, solid inverted baluster stem flanked by mereses, deep straight-sided bowl with bell- shaped bottom; (b) set-in slightly domed cover with solid oval stemmed finial; cut decoration: star of radiant ovals on base, paneled stem with raised scale band at top, paneled lower bowl including a raised wave band, curved section of cover has deeply cut vertical notches to divide section into 7 ovals (6 small, 1 large), two concentric rings with diaper band and radiant ovals on top of cover, finial cut to form a bud with two raised scale bands; engraved decorations: along rim of foot a band of hatched triangles; on the bowl a panel with a pastoral scene showing a young man leaning against the knees of a seated girl and being crowned with a wreath by another girl, two allegorical figures (a woman with sword and scale, a man with wreath and palm branch) surmounted by crown-like cartouches, around central panel and on reverse stylized palm motifs in polished raised engraving (or cutting) of transitional planes.
