Physical DescriptionColorless non-lead glass; blown, enameled, gilt. Cylindrical, straight-sided shape; gilt band flanked by rows of white dots below the rim; enameled scene on the sides of the Emperor, crowned, holding an orb and scepter, seated in a niche with the date "1597" above, with a shield in front of him bearing a double-headed eagle and red and white barred shield on its breast; men standing at either side (three on the Emperor's right, four at his left), each with a shield before him; inscribed above in white enamel "Die romische kaiserliche Meigestatt Samptt Den Sieben churfursten In irer kleidung amptt und Sitz .1.5.9.7." and, above the heads of the men, "Trier, Collen, Mentz, /Behem, Pfaltz, Sachssen, Brandenburg."; a green ground line below the figures; stylized plant on the reverse, with white lily-of-the-valley spray, and green, red, blue, and yellow stylized foliage; lengthy inscriptions in German below, in three zones; molded rounded footrim, with white enamel dots; bottom with slight kick and rough pontil mark.Provenance
