Physical DescriptionOpaque white and yellow lead glass; blown, overlay, gilt, and enameled. Tall, ovoid form, with tall, cylindrical neck; heavily enameled in the Japanese style; consists of a band of stylized black flowers against a gold background, above a field of hexagonal gold cells with stylized flowers, with three circular panels of black, red and gold; another band matching the top band; a band of gold scrolls and pendant flowers on a brown background; a band of red peonies, red-outlined gilt scrolls, and green leaves on a brilliant yellow ground; another band matching that above the peony panel; the body with three oval lobed panels, each with an elaborately and colorfully dressed figure, of a woman, a samurai warrior, and a geisha courtesan (?); the areas between the panels with elaborate gold figural decorations in drawing style, on a matte brownish ground, with male figures in clouds attacking or being observed by male figures on the ground; bands of meander pattern form circular panels enclosing stylized flowers, and the intervening spaces covered with an elaborate gilt grill pattern on brown, above and below the figural panels; flat base with ground concave pontil mark.
