Physical DescriptionTransparent dark blue lead glass; blown; sculpted wax coating. Tall, ovoid form, with short, waisted neck and everted rim; bolted to a separate foot with flattened ovoid knop at the top, above a bell-shaped foot with round edge; wax covering sculpted in classical style; bead-and-reel borders on either side of a band of flowers separated by foliate devices; egg and dart border at the base of the neck; wide band of classical decoration at the shoulder, including putti on lyres grasping elaborate foliate scrolls; a wide band around the middle of the body decorated with male and female figures and putti, along with various attributes, with a narrow band of names above, separated by flowers, and with swags below, inscribed "ZEUS / MELPOMENE / MNEMOSYNE / THALIA / URANIA / EUTERPE / POLYHYMNIA / APOLLO / CALLIOPE / CLIO / TERPSICHORE / ERATO"; meander border below; wide band below, with putti holding floral scrolls emanating from grotesques tending flaming altars; a foliate band; a double band of acanthus leaves at the base; scroll pattern on the foot knop, above foliage and scrollwork, with palmettes on the edge; held together with a metal tube, threaded at both ends, with nuts and spacer-washers at either end; the vase is free to rotate on the foot.
