Physical DescriptionColorless non-lead glass; blown, cut, engraved. (a) Straight- sided, tapered bowl with thistle base; upper section decorated with six panels, each covered with an engraved scene: one with an oval panel, framed with arms, topped with an eagle, with a miniature bucolic scene of a man playing a harp and a woman playing a mandolin, with formal drapery, scrolls and leaves above and below; another with two naked children carrying the head of a stag; another with an elaborate building and gardens; another with two naked children, one playing a horn, another carrying the music; another with a miniature landscape and elaborate formal decoration; and the last with two naked children blowing hunting horns; a faceted band below; the bulbous lower part of the bowl part of the bowl with relief-cut oval facets; faceted band and panel-cut tapered section at the base of the bowl; stem composed of a faceted band and an inverted baluster with cut oval facets, scallops, and panels; circular foot with faceted rim decorated on the underside with a sunburst of oval facets, and cut the upper side with an engraved formal border of scrolls and leaves at the rim; polished pontil mark. (b) Domed cover with rounded sides, and cut, inset flange; the sides with six cut panels, each with engraved formal decoration of baskets of fruit, scrollwork and foliage; faceted band and cut fluting at the top; finial composed of an ovoid knop with cut panels, scallops and ovals, above a diamond-faceted flattened knop.Provenance
