Physical DescriptionClear bubbly glass with impurities and very slight green tinge; free-blown and enameled. Body slightly increasing in diameter towards upper third then slightly tapering at rim, very high pushed up base with rough pontil mark, double walled foot ring made from same gather as Humpen; enamel decoration: on the obverse in multicolored enamel, predominantly in green, red- brown, blue and white, the representation of the Ochsenkopf, with the head of an ox against a blue background, on top of the mountain, a white church with red roof and onion topped tower, to the sides of the mountain appear the heads of two stags, a fawn (?) and a hare; a chain with a lock is attached to the blue area with the ox; four rivers flow out of the mountain; on the reverse a coat of arms of the von Gleichen family with two bear claws on a white background flanked by the initials and date: "H. W.-V. G. 1710."; the inscription on the reverse reads: "Ich bin der Edle Fichtelberg, Darin Gott Schuff manich Schones werck, Dann Silber, gold und Edel gestein, in mir Recht anzutreffen Sein." (I am the noble Fichtelberg in which God created some beautiful work because silver, gold, precious stones can be found in the depths of me. Initials, 1710; names of the four rivers flowing out of the mountain.); below rim a broad yellow band accompanied by five white lines, below the mountain a yellow and a red line, below the names of the rivers three lines in yellow, blue and red, and three continuous white lines; small white rosettes and one spiral motif in the empty spaces; white dashes on the foot ring; paper label on base: "595".Provenance
