Physical DescriptionComparatively heavy, clear, very bubbly glass with impurities and grey tinge; cold painted; wear marks at base; free-blown and painted (not fired). Cylindrical body with slightly concave base having rough pontil mark; decoration: on the obverse the head of a steer, predominantly in grey tones, topped by a crown, underneath two crossed axes and the date: "1696", all enclosed by two large branches flanking the steer: "Den 26. Maey Anno 1696"; on the reverse and above the crown of the steer the following inscription: "Vivat Meister Johan Gottlob Matzing. Wer Aepfel Schalt und sie nicht Iszt, bey Jungfern sitzt und sie nicht Kuszt, bey Bier Sitzt und Schenckt nicht ein. Der musz ein Dumer Teuifel seyn." (Who peels apples and doesn't eat them, sits with girls and does not kiss them, sits with a beer and does not refill: this must be a stupid devil.); below inscription a looped leaf branch, around rim a painted and gilded band; old catalogue number in white on base: "82B".
